Nagarjuna Sagar Dam

Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is an important irrigation dam on the river Krishna. This is the tallest and biggest masonry dam in the world. It is the third largest man made lake. Apart from this, some remains of Buddist civilization dating back to the third century A. D. are seen at an island called Nagarjunakonda on the other side of the river Krishna. Some excavations of the surroundings have brought to light the remains of a University which was flourished under Acharya Naragjuna, to Nagarjuna, the great Buddhist saint, scholar and philosopher, who migrated to Nagarjunakonda from Amaravathi to spread the massage of Lord Buddha. The foundation stone of this dam was laid by the first Prime Minister of Independent India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 10-12-1955.
